What Causes Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is multi-factorial. The main influencing factors are Physical, Psychological, Lifestyle, General Health and Social. Luckily, over 90% of low back pain is NOT caused by an ominous pathology! Common low back pain triggers include:

Physical:

  • Back strain or sprain

  • Sudden spike in training

  • Not moving enough

  • Keeping the same posture for too long

  • Recent illness


Psychological:

  • Fear of movement

  • Thoughts/beliefs about pain

  • Anger

  • Frustration

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Low Mood


Lifestyle:

  • Poor sleep

  • Smoking

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Poor diet

  • Not enough physical activity


General Health:

  • Heart disease

  • Lung disease

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes

  • Osteoporosis

  • Mental Health issues

  • Medications


Social:

  • Work pressure

  • Family troubles

  • Isolation

  • Reduced participation in meaningful activities

  • Stressful situations

As you can see, there are a lot of factors which can influence low back pain. The great thing is that it often resolves on its own through guidance and exercise!
